Of the 1000+ schools in Victoria that took part in inter-school chess tournaments this year, St Kilda Primary was 1 of only 24 schools that made it to the Inter-school’s final in Balwyn. Rather than writing a blow by blow piece about the event I’ll summarise by saying that the team, consisting of Fergus C, Flynn P, Gabriel C, Lewis C and Geng K, came 14th – a great achievement.
Instead, the focus of this post is about passing on the baton. For the last 7 or 8 years there have been a number of strong players at St Kilda Primary and I, along with other parents, have been able to take kids to competitions. Unfortunately we won’t be able to do this next year and, in the words of recruitment posters, ‘We Need You!’. We need you because there are 10 – 15 boys and girls from different years in the school’s chess club who are described as having ‘heaps of potential’. They need to be taken to competitions once or twice a term to give purpose to their talent. So if you’re a parent, or a teacher, who is interested in maintaining St Kilda’s great chess tradition please get in touch with George Zaprudski who runs the chess program at the school. He can let you know what’s involved.
If you want your child to learn chess then the school chess club is a great place to start. This year the chess club was taken by Flora who is a young chess champion from China, she was at school with the current female world number 1 and has been a great role model for the kids – again contact George. The East St Kilda and Caulfield Chess Club is another great local place to learn chess and they have a kids club each Tuesday from 6pm to 7:30pm during term time. They have a website with contact details.
Well that’s it for A Year In Chess, I hope there will be many more for St Kilda Primary.
Barnaby Chiverton – Chess Coordinator SKPS
An enormous thank you to Barnaby who has provided immense support since chess was introduced at our school! As Barnaby said – ‘WE NEED YOU’. Please give this some consideration over the holidays and we’d love to hear from you in 2018.
