In September this year a chess team made up Fergus C, Gabriel C, Flynn P, Ariel H and Harry A travelled to Castlemaine to take part in a Chess Victoria regional competition. The competition entry form stated that 320 children from 14 schools were participating and it was certainly busy when the team arrived at the spooky Castlemaine Gaol venue – complete with grizzly cells and a hangman’s noose. St Kilda played very well and came away with an individual gold and a team silver.

A month later the same team minus Gabriel C but plus Jacob M played in another Interzonal Chess competition, this time at Wesley against 103 players. Again St Kilda did very well with another individual gold, an individual 6th and another team silver.

Due to their great performances they were invited to the State Semi Finals at the Tivoli Club in Windsor – one of four such events totalling 534 players from 89 schools. St Kilda was in the largest semi final pool with 129 players from 29 different schools. The team now included all six players that had played in either Castlemaine or at Wesley and they were all keen to do their best. Like in the previous events our players played a total of seven games each. Each game had a time limit of 15 minutes per player which meant each game could last a maximum of 30 minutes. Usually this is not a problem because excitement equals speed but Flynn P played in a very considered way which brought him to a frenzied finish – slow play is probably why he is improving so quickly. At the end of the event 8 schools would be going through to the finals and maths skills were in evidence as they calculated their chances. In the penultimate round, St Kilda was in a fantastic 1st place! The final round however saw only 2 wins in 6 games but had they done enough … the results were read and St Kilda came 5th – enough to get into the finals!!!!

Recently, the St Kilda Chess Team went to Wesley for an Interschool Chess Tournament. The players of the team were Fergus, Flynn, Ariel, Jacob & Harry. After a series of games, 35 to be exact, the outcome of our team score was second place! We all came back with Silver Medals. Fergus won the first place trophy for best individual player out of 102 kids! Now the St Kilda Chess team is going to the Victorian State Semi Finals on Tuesday the 25th!

Go St Kilda!!

(If your child wants to learn chess then there is a wonderful club at school run by ZChess. There is also the East St Kilda and Caulfield Chess club – can be googled – which has a great group on Tuesday evenings for children at 6pm during term time. Finally chesskid.com is a fantastic, safe place to learn chess online.)

Thank you to Barnaby (Fergus’ Dad) for the terrific report and to James (Flynn’s Dad) for his input.semi-final-2016 img_0152 img_0157
