Our school is excited to be a finalist in the Resourcesmart Waste Primary School of the Year awards (for the second year running!). The awards ceremony is on Friday 11th November and we have our fingers crossed for success this year.
To manage our waste here at school we have taken a number of actions including weekly recycling inspections (thanks Jamal for keeping us on our toes!); recycling bins in all classrooms and in the staff room; recycling station in the main foyer; soft plastics recycling in the staff room; nude food; campaigns led by the children, eg the upcycled T-shirt bags being sold by the Year 1 children so that we reduce the number of plastic bags we use (available to purchase next Monday after assembly (7th November), Nature Club and their campaign to reduce the number of plastic straws we use, Y5’s focus on managing our waste and establishing a worm farm, chickens and compost systems.
Recycling forms a major part of our waste management strategy here at school and we have had many discussions about what we can and can’t recycle (thank you to Brett Hegder, CoPP for his support in answering some of our questions!)
National Recycling Week starts next week so maybe you would like to check out how good you are at recycling in your home? Not sure what you can and can’t recycle? Click here to take the Planet Ark Recycling Quiz and see how good you are! You might find out that you can recycle more than you think!
