At St Kilda Primary School, we believe that mathematics is not only a subject to be learned but a crucial skill set for navigating everyday life, solving real-world problems, and becoming active, critical citizens in a rapidly evolving technological world.

We focus on the essential proficiencies of Understanding, Fluency, Problem Solving, and Reasoning, which are applied across all 6 key strands:

  • Number
  • Algebra
  • Measurement
  • Space
  • Statistics
  • Probability

These proficiencies are not just limited to solving problems within mathematics; they are also crucial for applying mathematical thinking in a variety of other contexts and disciplines. Our curriculum is designed to help students see connections between mathematical ideas and encourage them to use these skills creatively to approach problems in a variety of contexts.

We aim for our students to:

  • Develop practical mathematical and numeracy skills that will help them in everyday life, work, and as responsible, informed members of society.
  • Apply mathematical concepts and processes to pose and solve problems across a range of real-world situations.
  • Acquire specialist mathematical knowledge and skills to support further study in mathematics and related fields.
  • Appreciate the beauty and depth of mathematics – from its history and foundational ideas to its modern day applications, aesthetics, and philosophical underpinnings.

Through a comprehensive and engaging curriculum, St Kilda Primary students build a solid foundation in mathematics, preparing them not only for academic success but also for lifelong learning and critical thinking in a world that is increasingly shaped by technology
